Batter my heart, three person'd God by John Donne

Classical Poetry by Famous Classical Poet:

Batter my heart, three person'd God by John Donne:

This sonnet of John Donne is my favourite one because it is so realistic in nature. Whenever I read this sonnet, I see my own reflection. Though it is classical in nature and not everyone can easily understand this but as I’ve studied it in a great depth, it has enabled me to rectify my mistakes and to build a stronger bond with God.

This whole sonnet is an intense prayer made by John Donne to purify his soul. He insists God to use harsh methods for bringing him back to his Creator as he knows that mild methods would not succeed with him. We always notice this fact that everyone among of us has a crystal clear image of the outcomes caused by following Satan. But still we choose to stay on the wrong path because of the temptations and attractions of this worldly life. Someone said it right hat your conscience is like a barking dog, it can not bite you but it keeps barking at you. Whenever our conscience gives red signals and warnings, we totally ignore them. I can relate this poem with my life because I’m also a great sinner but a repenter at the same time. Donne says that he wants to reform his bond with God but at this very moment he is engaged to Satan. Similarly, I feel myself so far from my Creator that I want Him to free me from the clutches of devil.

I feel like my soul has been totally damaged and God must re-create me to make me what I need to be. There is no doubt that Allah loves his slave for his repentance. It doesn’t matter how often and repeatedly we find ourselves in doing sins, we should constantly repent and turn back to Almighty.

To err is human. We are naturally made so weak that it is easy for us to do sins then to get involve in good deeds. But it is also in human nature that if he does something wrong then eventually he’ll feel bad and guilty. In my opinion, this guilt is actually a great blessing in disguise for us as it brings us back to our God. If one has strong belief in the mercy of Allah then sooner or later he will again be considered as one of His beloved slaves.

The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “The one who repents from sin is like one who did not sin.”

John Donne has written this sonnet because he knew the importance of God. He knew that he would be nothing without God. The whole crux of this sonnet is, we all are blindly following Satan but at the same time we are eagerly waiting for God to change us because we feel so helpless like Donne. We all are those helpless sinners who are continuously waiting for the mercy of Mighty God.
